Car door locks used to be simple, and we all knew it. The car owners and the car thieves all knew. Of course, it was very easy to lock yourself out. Push the button down and before you know it, there you were on the outside, with the keys on the inside.
The side benefit was that if you were locked out accidentally, a simple bit of work with a coat hanger could do the trick. Before you knew it, you'd be back into the vehicle. The vehicle owner just bent a hanger into a loop, and slid it through the crack between the door frame and window. Then the loop snagged the lock and pulled it up.
Those days are no more. Today, most late model cars have remote lock systems which use computer codes to lock and unlock and even dim the interior lights of a vehicle. Vehicles also are more difficult to be locked out of too. That's because they sometimes come equipped with warnings.
The locks won't lock if the key is in the ignition, for example. Many vehicles provide electric locks with keyless remotes instead of the simple, manual push-button locks used in the past. That means those remote keys lock the doors after you exit the vehicle and push a button. You can't lock it unless the key is in your hand.
Trying to fix a lock, or even break into your own car today is a much more difficult task. Most remote keys are powered by a small battery inside the remote. That remote triggers each door lock actuator which is really an electric motor and that motor turns a set of gears, which controls the lock. In other words, there are a lot of different moving pieces, and almost all of those pieces are controlled through electronics.
Of course, that's a good thing in many respects because it keeps those car thieves away. Additionally, when remote car lock devices first came out, they could be compromised more easily because the codes were simple and could be captured more easily. Today, the codes are more complex and even rotate through a sequence, making stealing a vehicle through such means much more difficult.
The advances in keyless and remote car locks also means that car owners shouldn't expect to be able to recover their own keys by using a coat hanger. It's simply just too easy to damage the vehicle and the electronic parts, so it's best to call an expert in these days. Find a local locksmith who offers 24-hour service and has the skills to deal with the newer, more complex lock systems. You will also want to find someone who can replace the remotes easily if needed.
